The name Guatemala means ¨place of trees¨.  This idea is represented in the 60% of Guatemalan territory with land suitable for forestry. We believe that the timber industry is essential for Guatemala´s development, as it helps reduce encroachment on parks and natural areas, it provides wood for industrial purposes and firewood, supplies environmental services and creates jobs that promote wellbeing in rural areas.  Interforest S.A. is a company dedicated to timber production emphasizing in forest plantations as well as forest conservation in Guatemala and the Central American region.  Currently Interforest manages 9000 ha of natural forests and plantations in three areas of Guatemala: Alta Verapaz, Izabal and Santa Rosa.  Interforest specializes in teak, melina and pine.

Interforest is the result of a merger between Ecos Forestry Fund Inc and Interfores SRL in 2008. Interforest SRL started its timber operations in 1991 through a group of Guatemalan investors interested in developing sustainable timber harvesting.

Ecos Forestrey Fund Inc., a private capital fund focused on sustainable forest management, developed their plantations in Guatemala in 1995. This fund is part of Grupo Ecos, who invest in projects in forestry as well as renewable energy in Central and South America.

Since 2008, Interforest S.A. has improved its efficiency and increased profits. The company initiated harvesting operations in teak; the timber has been mainly exported to the Asian market. Currently, Interforest is implementing a strategic plan to expand its current operations in order to provide forestry services to third parties at the national and regional level.
